Dear Maynard Community,

The topic of designing a radon mitigation system and/or the infrastructure for one within the new Green Meadow Elementary School building was recently discussed amongst the Green Meadow Elementary School Building Committee. As part of that topic, the project team chose to mimic the radon testing it performed in 2022, during the Feasibility Study for the project, to understand what the current readings are at the existing school with the thought that, although the new school will have a far more robust building envelope, it’s worth understanding where the radon levels are at currently in the existing school to get a general baseline. As is indicated in the attached letter, due to the tests being conducted while ledge blasting and hammering was occurring on site, there were a couple rooms that tested to a level that require further testing be conducted and ventilation measures be taken.

The District has met with the project’s hazardous material consultant, and the attached letter summarizes the discussion and the recommendations of the hazardous material consultant.

The District understands the sensitivity to this issue, and we’re making sure we’re taking the appropriate steps to resolve it. We will keep the community updated as the additional testing scope advances, and as is stated in the attached letter, we’re confident the radon levels in the two rooms will decrease to an appropriate level.

All the testing results can be found at:
